HMS Devonshire sailed to Bantry Bay, Mers-el-Kabir, the West Indies and Belize. When in the West Indies, Chris was enjoying a game of cricket on the sand when a local bowler joined the game. Later they discovered he was Wes Hall, the terror of our English Test Team.
One of the best stories of Chris' time on HMS Superb was at Kingston, Jamaica. Chris was detailed to run guests between shore and ship for a large cocktail party. A large, cheery party of Jamaicans came down to the boat. They did not have the requisite invitation card, so Chris did not let them on. It transpired the party included the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Bustamante.
Whilst on HMS Duke of York in the late 1940s, Chris travelled to USA (Norfolk, Virginia). When onboard the Duke of York, the ship was alongside USN Missouri. Chris was stationed in a motor cutter alongside the two big boats and ended up having to dart in between them to fish out a line that had not been caught by the US vessel, grapple the heaving line with a boat hook, secure it and escape before being crushed.
In circa 1949 stopping points on HMS Superb included Casablanca, Copenhagen and Gibraltar, amongst others
